Weather fuels Concordia pollution fears
FEARS are growing in Italy about the potential threat to the environment from the capsized cruise ship Costa Concordia because of bad weather which has forced the suspension of the recovery operation.
The vessel is carrying 500,000 gallons of fuel but work to remove it cannot progress because of the weather, which has been blamed for the ship moving slightly where it ran aground off the Tuscan island of Giglio.
The authorities are also still searching for more than a dozen people missing since the accident earlier this month and it is estimated the whole recovery operation could now take up to ten months to complete, raising questions over whether the island and surrounding area will be exposed to any environmental damage before the work is complete.
