Irish aces class at York
Duke Of Marmalade and New Approach are set to clash at York in what promises to be the race of the season after they were among 11 declarations for tomorrow's Juddmonte International.
The clash of the generations between the two Irish aces will get the four-day Ebor Festival off to a rousing start as they do battle over an extended 10 furlongs.
Aidan O'Brien's Duke Of Marmalade has been the horse of the year so far, chalking up four Group One victories, the latest in the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes.
In contrast, New Approach has not been seen since winning the Vodafone Derby 10 weeks ago. The dual Guineas runner-up, trained by Jim Bolger, has been sidelined with a muscle problem.
However, the big two have not exactly frightened off the opposition. Henry Cecil is double-handed with Multidimensional and Phoenix Tower, who represents the sponsors, as the former champion trainer goes for his third success in a race he first won in 1976 with Wollow.
Trainer John Gosden has declared Pipedreamer, a recent course and distance winner, but warned he will only run if the ground is suitable.
Sir Michael Stoute will saddle both Linngari and Rob Roy while Mick Channon also has two runners in Championship Point and Halicarnassus.
David Elsworth's Stubbs Art, third in both the English and Irish Guineas, and Duke Of Marmalade's stable companion Red Rock Canyon complete the entry for a mouth-watering contest.
Patkai puts his Classic claims on the line in the Ladbrokes Great Voltigeur Stakes, also tomorrow.
Sir Michael Stoute's progressive three-year-old, ante-post favourite for the Ladbrokes St Leger, heads a field of eight for the Group Two heat which is regarded as the most significant trial for next month's Classic.
This decade Milan (2001), Rule Of Law (2004) and Lucarno (2007) have followed up victory at York by going on to glory at Doncaster.
Aidan O'Brien is triple-handed with Alessandro Volta, Bashkirov and Hindu Kush whole Richard Hannon runs Scintillo and Andrew Balding has declared Top Lock.
The only Voltigeur runners not holding a St Leger entry are the John Gosden-trained Centennial and supplementary entry Meydan City, who will only run if the ground is suitable.
Tamayuz confirmed himself a miler of the highest order with a deeply impressive success in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville yesterday.
The Freddie Head-trained three-year-old shot to prominence with victory in the Prix Jean Prat last time out and confirmed that to be no fluke in this Group One contest.
Tracking his pacemaker Racinger from the off, Davy Bonilla asked his mount to quicken a fair way out and the response was immediate as he stretched clear.
Natagora kept on admirably for second, with Major Cadeaux third for Richard Hannon.
