It's Everymanforhimself

WITH three wins and a third from four career starts over 5f at Beverley, it is fair to say Everymanforhimself feels right at home on The Westwood and Kevin Ryan's sprinter can return to winning ways in the Levy Board Handicap this afternoon.

Tried with a visor at Newmarket last time, the five-year-old acquitted himself well behind subsequent Wokingham favourite Jimmy Styles.

That form is rock-solid, as was an earlier second at York to Internationaldebut, and with the usual blinkers back in place today Everymanforhimself, who has already won off today's mark, should be able to cut down his rivals inside the final furlong.

Richard Fahey's string is firing on all cylinders and Starla Dancer could be another winner for the Musley Bank handler in the Racing UK On Sky 432 Maiden Stakes.

This daughter of Danehill Dancer is up against raiders from Newmarket and Lambourn as well as Burns Night, a once-raced son of Selkirk from the in-form Mark Johnston yard, but she has created a favourable impression in both starts this term and her conqueror over today's C&D last month, Arabian Pearl, just lost out in a Carlisle handicap off a mark of 77 next time. Starla Dancer has a progressive profile and can finally get off the mark today.

Bryan Smart is mulling over the many options for Ceedwell following her creditable effort in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. A step up to six furlongs is on the cards for the daughter of Exceed And Excel who stayed on well to take third place behind all-the-way American-trained winner Jealous Again and Misheer over the minimum trip.

Now the Lowther Stakes at York, Ayr's Firth of Clyde Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket are among the races the Thirsk trainer is considering.

"She's come out of the race really well, she's settled in and I couldn't be more pleased," said Smart. "We'll step her up to six now. We'll just let her chill out a bit after Ascot and have a look.

"There are several places she could go. There's the Firth of Clyde, a Group Three at Ayr I won two years ago and the Cheveley Park. I think she'd be good enough to have a crack at that. The next step might be the Lowther."

Smart was also delighted with the return to form at the Royal meeting of Captain Gerrard, who belied his odds of 66-1 to finish a commendable fourth to Scenic Blast in the King's Stand Stakes.

Smart has yet to decide whether Captain Gerrard will take up his entry in the Dubai Duty Free Millenium Millionaire Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh on Sunday.

Karl Burke is dreaming of Melbourne Cup glory with Furmigadelagiusta after his classy Listed victory at Pontefract.

Each of the six runners was in with a chance as they straightened up for home in the mile-and-a-half toteswinger Pontefract Castle Stakes.

But it was Furmigadelagiusta, ridden by Phillip Makin, who edged into the lead approaching the final furlong.

Middleham-based Burke said of the 9-4 shot: "I have always thought a lot of him and he is my favourite in the yard. He injured a knee when fifth in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes at Royal Ascot last year – I really thought he would have won – and we had to give him a lot of time off.

"His owner was keen to run him over hurdles, but I suggested we give him a chance to be a serious Cup horse. I don't see why we shouldn't have a crack at the Melbourne Cup in November. He would not mind soft ground, but would not want it firm. That is why we ran him (going officially good to firm) to see how he handled it."
