LEADING figures from the worlds of finance, academia and the law met at The Yorkshire Post headquarters yesterday to judge the entries for the ninth annual Excellence in Business Awards.

Their verdict? “This year was really tough,” said a spokesman for the judging panel, made up of representatives from the Bank of England, Bradford University School of Management, global law firm DLA Piper, Big Four accountants PwC, Yorkshire Bank and The Yorkshire Post. Judges were impressed with the way that Yorkshire businesses are embracing new technology to improve productivity and pricing in highly competitive markets.

They also noted that companies that combine technology with innovation tend to have the best profit margins.

The shortlist will be published on Tuesday and the winners revealed at a glittering ceremony at The Queens hotel in Leeds on October 30.
