Leeds East Labour MP Richard Burgon said he is currently among MPs locked down in the House of Commons chamber.

Mr Burgon said via text message: "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of those who have died in this brutal, senseless and unforgiveable attack and those who have been traumatised by witnessing it.

"Our police and security services have yet again demonstrated their dedication and bravery in the face of danger. Our emergency services have yet again demonstrated their skill and compassion and showed how indispensable they are. The full picture is not yet clear but what is clear is that democracy endures and prevails over these sickening attacks on it."
