FAMILIES with children who are set to start primary school this year are being reminded to apply before the deadline of Friday next week.
Leeds City Council warned that in previous years parents who apply after the deadline have 30 per cent less chance of getting a place at one of their preferred schools.
And they are urging people to ensure they make five choices and include their nearest school. Last year 415 applications for reception class places in the city were made after the deadline of which 159 were not allocated a school they had chosen because they were already full. School places was also a controversial issue last year because of the number of parents in North Leeds who missed out on places at their preferred schools despite applying on time and choosing local schools.
A Fair Access campaign was launched by parents in Roundhay, Moortown and Alwoodley with more than 80 parents said to have been allocated a place for their child at a school they had not chosen. Leeds City Council then secured an extra 90 places at three primaries. Parents can apply online at www.leeds.gov.uk/admissions. People will receive a confirmation email and then receive an offer by email on April 16.
Parents can also apply using a paper ‘common preference form’. They will have their offer letter sent out by second class post so can expect to receive it a few days later.
Coun Lucinda Yeadon, executive member for children and families, said: “In the last school year, over 400 applications for primary school places were made after the deadline. It’s far more difficult to allocate places in these circumstances and families who do this risk not being able to send their child to their preferred school.”
“Unfortunately every year there are disappointed parents and children who we are unable to offer a place to at one of their preferred schools because they apply after the deadline. We want to give everyone a fair opportunity by encouraging everyone to apply on time.
“It’s essential that preferences are made by the deadline on January 15 and that up to five schools are listed - including your nearest school - to ensure every child and young person has the best chance of attending a preferred school.”
