Leeds United offer deal to Jermaine Beckford to stave off interest from Premier League
LEEDS UNITED have offered a new contract to 34-goal top scorer Jermaine Beckord. The 25-year-old has just 12 months remaining on his existing deal and has already attracted interest from a host of clubs including Sunderland and Coventry City.
Beckford is understood to be keen to resolve his future following United's failure to win promotion and United have moved quickly to try and keep hold of the striker.
Chief executive Shaun Harvey said: "I spoke to Jermaine's agent on Wednesday and we will be forwarding an offer of a new contract now we know which division we will be playing in next season.
"I understand Jermaine's desire to have his future resolved and to know what the future holds for him.
"But there is plenty of time to resolve this matter over the summer.
"Having seen Jermaine's reaction at the end of last Thursday night (when Leeds were knocked out of the play-offs by Millwall) when he was virtually inconsolable, that did not look like the reaction of a player who is desperate to get away from this club.
"I understand he wants his future resolving and so do Leeds United. It will be done in the proper manner between the two parties."
