What’s the biggest development you’ve seen in the legal world during your career?
The changes to Legal Aid have had the greatest impact on the legal world as the systematic reduction of its availability has reduced access to justice for many people.
What law would you like to see changed?
I would like to see a more democratic process and an expansion of Legal Aid in appropriate cases – i.e. support for the most vulnerable along with a more relaxed approach to public funding.
What is the most exciting work you’ve ever done?
I had to take an injunction out against the News of the World as my client had inadvertently spoken to an undercover reporter and if they had published the story her life would have been in danger. I tried to negotiate with them, but they wouldn’t budge. As a result, I had to take out the injunction and the story was never published.
Who in the legal world do you most admire?
Those lawyers and judges who make a difference by putting their heads above the parapet to speak out for those people who don’t have a voice.
What advice would you give someone starting out in the profession?
Individuals with enthusiasm, passion and ability will always do well. Find the area of law that brings this out in you.
