Cancer crusade

FAMILIES across Yorkshire have reason to be grateful for the work of the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity. Its work has allowed thousands of people to die with dignity in the surroundings that they have chosen while also supporting bereaved families through that difficult time.

Those faced with a terminal illness deserve the right to exercise that choice. Sadly, however, at the worst possible moment, large numbers of patients discover that options they might favour, such as dying at home, are closed to them.

That is why Sir Ranulph Fiennes's imminent attempt to reach the summit of Everest is so important. Feats of endurance capture the public imagination. Not only will Sir Ranulph's expedition garner much-needed funds for a deserving cause, but it will also raise the profile of a subject that many are reluctant to discuss.

The generous donation of 1m by millionaire Yorkshireman Paul Sykes is a welcome vote of confidence in Sir Ranulph's efforts, and the charity's work.

It is to be hoped Mr Sykes's contribution sets the tone for a hugely successful fund-raising campaign, allowing the charity to help all those families who find themselves in the most distressing of circumstances.
