Trust pays off
ANYONE who can turn £2.5m into a £40m boost for the Yorkshire economy deserves a bonus – or at least some public recognition. What the Prince's Trust has achieved in taking cash from someone else and then making it grow, which has proved beyond some of the best minds in the City of London, has benefited thousands of young people.
The numbers alone, which show about 500 jobs created or saved, more than 3,000 young people helped into work and more than 450 businesses launched in the region and more than 2,000 young people given training, tell one success story. To that can be added another tale of the transformation of the lives of troubled young people, horizons broadened and confidence boosted. It is impossible to put a price on these changes.
The money generated over three years, achieved with grants from regional development agency Yorkshire Forward, shows the importance of investing in workers at the start of their careers. It should never be forgotten that, whatever background they are from, today's young people are the inventors, chief executives and statesmen of tomorrow.
