OLD solutions seem unfashionable as we rush into the green future, so traditionalists will celebrate at the new-found use of sheep's wool.
The decision to insulate the 5.1m regional agricultural centre, in Harrogate, with fleeces, is about more than just protecting one building in an innovative way, however. It is symbolic of the wider changes that farmers need to make, and are making, for them to survive in an inhospitable environment.
Britain's rural communities, particularly in Yorkshire, have faced manifold problems in recent years, ranging from an unsympathetic Government to cheap foreign competition, so the new demand for sheep's wool is a valuable boost. It must be hoped others will follow the lead of the Great Yorkshire Showground.
The new agricultural centre has shown that adopting green measures does not have to mean neglecting the skills of
the past.
