Louise Haigh most hard-working of all new MPs

Whether she has been campaigning on the living wage, protecting civil service jobs in Sheffield or defending Freedom of Information rights, Ms Haigh has made a name for herself, and even won admiration from Speaker John Bercow.

The Labour representative for Sheffield Heeley is the busiest of the 177 MPs elected since May, due to her 90 speeches and asking 471 parliamentary questions – the highest of any new MP.

The lowest is Tory MP Royston Smith, representative for Southampton, who is the least active with five speeches and two questions asked since May.

The Speaker has previously described Ms Haigh’s “terrier like intensity” for her pursuit of ministers over tax office closures. She has also used her activity in Parliament to reveal the extent of fracking exploration licences in Yorkshire and help expose the teacher recruitment and retention shortage.

She said: “I’ve been working hard to stand up for my constituents in Sheffield and hold ministers to account, especially when so many in this government are often determined to hide things.

“On issues such as fracking in our Yorkshire countryside, inadequate flood spending and HMRC closures in Sheffield and challenging the Government’s plan to move jobs from Sheffield to London I have tried to hold the Government’s feet to the fire in Parliament.”
