Schools reforms ‘failing’ legions of young carers

Nearly a third of young carers in secondary schools are missing lessons or experiencing educational difficulties according to research commissioned by the Department for Education

In those looking after a relative with drug or alcohol problems, the figure rises to 40 per cent

Nearly 70 per cent of young carers say they are bullied and feel isolated at school

Attendance was found to be an issue for 20 per cent of all young carers, who had a typical attendance rate of 64 per cent before they began to receive support

With support, attendance increased to 81 per cent

A fifth of families engaging with young carer support services were referred for help by schools.
