A MAN has been charged with the attempted murder of an 81-year-old pensioner following an incident in a village near
York.

The man, aged 56, who also faces a charge of common assault, is due to appear before York Magistrates’ Court today.

The charges follow an assault at a house in Upper Poppleton, which happened at about 9pm on Friday, during which an 81-year-old man suffered serious head and chest injuries.

He was taken to York District Hospital. A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said last night that he remained in a “serious condition.”

An 83-year-old woman, who was also in the house, was not injured in the incident, although she was left very shaken.

Officers are continuing to offer support to the 83-year-old woman.
