Man hospitalised after serious house fire in Doncaster

Crews from Doncaster, Thorne and Edlington were called to the home in Sunderland Place, Tickhill shortly before midnight on Friday.

They used hose reels to tackled the blaze, which caused severe damage to the ground floor.

A man in his 70s had escaped the house but was suffering from smoke inhalation.

He was given oxygen by firefighters and taken to hospital by ambulance.

South Yorkshire Fire Service today said it was thought that the fire started after soft furnishings were placed too close to a heater.

Group manager Simon Dunker, who attended the incident, said: “This was a very serious house fire. The house was full developed in fire when our crews arrived on the scene and they did a fantastic job to prevent the blaze from spreading to neighbouring properties.

"Fortunately, working smoke alarms raised the alarm and the man managed to escape. It’s yet another reminder of the importance of having working smoke alarms and testing them regularly.”
