Matthew hits gold trail to defeat Willstrop
SHEFFIELD'S Nick Matthew secured a gold medal at the World Games in Chinese Taipei after defeating Yorkshire rival James Willstrop yesterday.
Matthew, who celebrates his 29th birthday today, edged out Leeds-based Willstrop 11-8, 11-6, 11-5 title after a gruelling 42 minutes.
For 25-year-old Willstrop it was his first tournament back since undergoing ankle surgery back in April.
In the first game, Matthew - who endured a 90-minute marathon against third seed Mohd Azlan Iskandar in the semi-final - pulled ahead from 9-8 to take a 1-0 lead before building up a 6-0 advantage in the second.
Willstrop then came back to 7-4 before No 1 seed Matthew pulled away again.
Willstrop finally got his nose in front in the third, but it was short-lived as Matthew hit back to take a lead he never relinquished.
In the women's draw, world No 1 Nicol David saw off the challenge from Netherlands' Natalie Grinham to win 11-6, 11-8, 11-6.
