McInnes's joy at Redcar

Ian McInnes broke new ground when Tagula Breeze provided him with his first two-year-old success in the Redcar A Course For All Reasons Median Auction Maiden Stakes.

Royston Ffrench brought the 7-2 chance to head favourite Countrywide City inside the final furlong and kept him going well to hold on by half a length.

Last week the Beverley-based trainer, who has held a licence for five years, sent out his first jumping winner.

He said: ''We have never had a lot of two-year-olds and we have half a dozen this time.

''Tagula Breeze has always excited us at home and we have another couple of nice ones, too, so it is good to get off the mark.

''We have been having a quiet time. I don't know if it is because we are near an oilseed rape field and that has been affecting the horses or it is because I have been overdoing it with them on our new gallops, but hopefully things are picking up now.''

Ted Durcan bagged a treble, opening his scoring on Henry Cecil's Timetable (2-9) in the Redcar Conference Centre Median Auction Maiden Stakes and then bringing Godolphin's even-money favourite Gold Sovereign home in front under top weight in the Boddingtons Redcar Straight-Mile Championship Handicap (Qualifier).

The popular rider then took the closing Go Racing In Yorkshire Summer Festival Handicap on the Rae Guest-trained Amicable Terms (14-1).

Durcan said: ''It has been a great day, they were my only three rides and they all looked good rides and to have chances. It doesn't often work out, but it has done today.''

Phillip Makin sustained back injuries in a fall on the gallops and Tony Hamilton deputised for him on the Michael Dods-trained Kiwi Bay, who ran out an impressive winner of the Anderson Barrowcliff Handicap.

The 7-2 favourite was shouldering top-weight, but he made smooth progress to lead over a furlong from home and drew right away to pass the post with five lengths to spare over Party In The Park.

Dods said: ''Tony has ridden three winners for me this season and he and Fergal Lynch will come and ride out for us while Phillip is off.

''I was a bit concerned about the ground for Kiwi Bay, but there is no jar. He is a nice horse and I think he met something a bit good at Leicester last time and this was weaker.

''He has not really filled into his frame yet and hopefully he will improve.''
