Medal Mayhem: How team GB's memorable weekend unfolded
Saturday 3.24am BST: GOLD – Rebecca Adlington, swimming, women's 800m freestyle.
Adlington added to her 400m medal in stunning style as she raced clear of the field to win over the longer distance in a world record time of 8 minutes, 14.01 seconds.
10.02am: BRONZE – Elise Laverick and Anna Bebington, rowing, women's double sculls.
Britain's first rowing medal of the 2008 Games came as a late surge from Laverick and Bebington brought them right into the mix for medals
10.20am: bronze – Matthew Wells (pictured left) and Stephen Rowbotham, rowing, men's double sculls.
Bradford-born Wells and Rowbotham finished just 1.33 seconds behind winners David Crawshay and Scott Brennan from Australia.
10.39am: GOLD – Tom James, Steve Williams, Pete Reed and Andy Hodge, rowing, men's fours.
The flagship men's four did not let anyone down with a superb win - Team GB's third in a row in this event. It was a dramatic finish as they came from almost a length back to pip Australia.
11.57am: bronze – Chris Newton, track cycling, men's points race.
Britain had already laid down a marker on Friday with victory in the team sprint. And the medal rush continued in the first final of the day where Newton turned in an impressive performance.
12.34pm: Bronze – Steven Burke, track cycling, men's individual pursuit.
Burke had battled his way through to the last four and almost set up an all-British final with Bradley Wiggins, but had to settle for a bronze play-off against Alexei Markov of Russia, which he won comfortably.
12.40pm: GOLD – Bradley Wiggins, track cycling, men's individual pursuit.
It was little surprise when Wiggins romped to victory over New Zealand's Hayden Roulston to win gold for the second Games running.
1.05pm: GOLD AND SILVER – Chris Hoy and Ross Edgar, track cycling, keirin.
Hoy's victory never appeared in doubt, but Edgar provided Britain with a less-expected boost as he flew off the final bend to pinch silver virtually on the line.
Sunday
6.33am: GOLD – Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson, sailing, Yngling.
The Yngling trio chose the best possible time to record their only win of the event to give Ayton and Webb a second consecutive gold after their success four years ago.
8.57am: GOLD – Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter, rowing, men's lightweight double sculls.
Purchase and Hunter came into the final unbeaten in 12 races, but any fears of falling at the unlucky 13th hurdle were dispelled by a fine race in which they led from the start.
9.18am: GOLD – Ben Ainslie, sailing, Finn
Ainslie was already assured of a silver medal and knew all he had to do was finish within five places of American Zach Railey to win a gold for the third Games running and become the most successful British sailor in Olympic history.
9.37am: SILVER – Annie Vernon, Debbie Flood, Frances Houghton, Katherine Grainger, rowing, women's quadruple sculls.
The British crew looked to have the gold medal sewn up only to be pegged back by China in the closing stages.
10.16am: GOLD AND SILVER – Rebecca Romero and Wendy Houvenaghel, track cycling, women's individual pursuit.
It was just a matter of which order it was in. As it was Romero took the gold by more than three seconds .
10.36am: SILVER – rowing, men's eight.
The rowing regatta ended on a high for Britain as the men's eight earned a silver in a closely-fought race.
1.10pm: BRONZE – Louis Smith (pictured right), gymnastics, pommel horse.
The 19-year-old from Cambridgeshire became the first British man to win an individual gymnastics medal.
