Michael Vaughan stakes early claim for Ashes recall with Yorkshire century
Abu Dhabi MICHAEL Vaughan made the most of his time in the middle to post a hundred as Yorkshire beat Surrey by 33 runs in the Emirates Airline Pro ARCH Trophy at the Sheikh Zayed stadium in Abu Dhabi.
The former England captain made 115 – his first century for Yorkshire since June 2004 – to help Yorkshire to 295-8 in their 50 overs.
Surrey, who chose to blood a number of youngsters, made 262-9 in response.
Vaughan gave the England selectors a timely nudge ahead of this Ashes summer of cricket, with neither Ian Bell nor Owais Shah having staked a claim to the No 3 spot in the side.
He has not played for England since resigning the captaincy last August, but led the way for his county, taking a particular liking to the leg-spin of Chris Schofield, twice driving him through the covers and then hooking him through midwicket to bring up his half-century.
Vaughan's innings contained 10 fours and a six – lifting Matthew Spriegel over midwicket – and came at a run a ball before he was caught by Schofield in the deep off Chris Jordan with four overs left.
The 34-year-old had combined in useful partnerships with Joe Sayers, who made 55 off 78 balls in a stand of 128, and captain Anthony McGrath, with whom he put on 64 for the third wicket.
Surrey's openers got off to a great start in response with Matthew Hoggard's first three overs going for 35 runs, forcing McGrath to replace him with Bresnan.
Scott Newman and former Hampshire batsman Michael Brown carried on at over six an over until the former was bowled by Steve Patterson for 40.
Richard Pyrah made it two down when he dismissed Brown lbw for his first half-century in Surrey colours, his 51 coming off 61 balls.
Usman Afzaal also reached 50 before falling to a catch by David Wainwright off Patterson with James Benning bowled by Pyrah three runs later.
Pyrah then had Schofield caught by Andrew Gale at mid-on and claimed his fourth when he bowled Stewart Walters for 57, giving him figures of 4-29.
Surrey were left needing 65 off the last five overs, but Bresnan struck twice in the 48th over to ensure the result was a formality.
Kevin Pietersen has been denied an opportunity to return to the role as England captain after being overlooked as stand-in should Andrew Strauss fail to recover from a hamstring injury for tomorrow's opening one-day international against the West Indies.
Pietersen was removed as captain in January after reporting a breakdown in communications with coach Peter Moores during the tour to India.
He seemed the obvious choice as stand-in if Strauss is unable to captain England at the start of the series at the Providence Stadium. But instead of returning to Pietersen, England have named Durham all-rounder Paul Collingwood as the stand-in if required tomorrow and for the remainder of the five-match series.
