Mix old and new for a timeless, antique interior

There is something very reassuring about old, well-worn furniture. Although brand new furniture is nice, there is always that worry of it getting damaged. You want to keep it looking new for as long as possible. With older furniture or older-looking furniture, that concern is lessened.

With the whole world talking about reducing waste and recycling this is the perfect time to look at what you have already before you add in anything new. A room can be completely refreshed simply by adding in one new statement item, to complement your existing style.

Don't be hasty in throwing furniture away as items which fit in or look a bit tired can be painted, reupholstered or even wallpapered to give a more contemporary look.

Many of us will be looking at ways to make our money go further and by rejuvenating items that you already have, you can save money to invest in new furniture.

Sometimes, however, you do just need something new. But then it can become a problem trying to find furniture that fits with the rest of your 'well-worn' interior.

Your first port of call should be Barker and Stonehouse as they're sure to have something to fit the bill.

There are plenty of ranges which are perfect.

My personal favourite is the Chandernagor range which has a definite antique look about it. Or in unpainted wood there is the Kimberley or Riftswood collection. When it comes to adding a sofa to a room like this, things can get a little more tricky. I would suggest something with a bold but traditional pattern or leather. You can't go too far wrong with the beautiful Buckingham or Asquith sofa, again from Barker and Stonehouse.

To show antique style furniture off to its best I always think that bright white walls work well especially with wooden floor boards and a lovely traditional, red rug.

If the room decor is too busy, it takes the spotlight away from the real stars of the show – the furniture.

All the furniture mentioned above is available from.barkerandstonehouse.
