Communities across Yorkshire are increasingly taking an active role in the running of libraries that were once controlled by local authorities.

Many councils are in the process of handing over libraries to community groups to run as they try to find millions of pounds in savings to cope with falls in Government grants.

Doncaster Council recently put forward proposals to move eight of its libraries into community control in the coming year. It already has 12 run by public groups and the latest move will leave just four of Doncaster’s libraries operated by the authority itself.
