THIS weekend marks the start of a new publishing era for the Yorkshire Post, with the launch of its first dedicated application for the Apple iPad.

It is believed to be the first news “app” for the popular tablet focused entirely on Yorkshire and the north of England, and will contain the entire printed edition of the newspaper as well as a live, multimedia module that updates in real time with breaking news, sport and business stories.

Readers can browse the paper and all its supplements, including the Saturday magazine, plus an archive of recent editions. Each can be searched for specific text and downloaded for viewing when not connected to the internet.

The live module contains video reports and audio programmes exclusive to the iPad edition.

Yorkshire Post Editor Peter Charlton said: “This is a major development which keeps the Yorkshire Post up to speed with the latest media technology.

“Tablets will play an increasingly dominant part in the way people access information and this is one of the most important steps forward in the Yorkshire Post’s 258-year history. It is a very different experience to reading online and having been at the forefront of that newspaper revolution over ten years ago it is fitting that we are in the midst of this one.”

Last week’s launch of Apple’s third-generation iPad, coupled with a price cut on the iPad 2, has seen sales of tablets soaring. The Yorkshire Post app uses the distinctive touch screen to let readers zoom in and out of pages at will, and “swipe” through pictures and videos.

The launch is the first in a raft of new formats for the paper. It will be followed shortly by football apps for iPhone and Android mobiles, which let fans see the YP’s coverage of their club and browse live match-day scores, results and text commentary, plus a complete range of other statistics.

The iPad app is available now from Apple’s App Store, with a 30-day free trial. A full subscription costs £7.99 per month, a saving of nearly 50 per cent on the printed edition.
