legendary escapologist Harry Houdini is one of many showmen celebrated by an exhibition which has opened at Sheffield University’s National Fairground Archive.
The event concentrates on Sheffield’s 200-year history of shows. Portugese student Sofia Lopes looking at a rare poster of Houdini’s show from 1911 when he visited the city on a six-day tour. Other artefacts, posters and footage are included which cover what experts at the university called the world of “illegitimate” entertainment, including music hall and variety, magic and travelling amusements.
