Shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander refused to be drawn yesterday on whether Labour would back the Government if it went back to parliament for support on military action if there were fresh chemical attacks in Syria.

He said if Mr Cameron sought a second vote following a decision by the US Congress, it would call into question his judgment as he would be going back on promises he made after Thursday’s debate that the UK would not participate.
