Oldham Athletic v Leeds United: Eyes of the world on Leeds in internet first
Fa cup: LEEDS UNITED will make history today as Simon Grayson eyes a second glamour cup tie of the season against one of the Premier League "big-hitters".
The Elland Road club make the short trip across the Pennines to Oldham for a match that will become the first in the FA Cup's long history to be shown live on the internet.
Coverage, which will be available free to supporters, is available via the Football Association's official website as part of the governing body's attempts to explore alternative methods of revenue in the wake of Setanta's collapse.
Should the Oldham v Leeds experiment prove successful, the FA could go down the route of setting up their own subscription channel.
Both clubs will receive 67,500 apiece for today's first-round tie, which kicks-off at 5.15pm, and Leeds chairman Ken Bates believes screening games via the internet will become more common in the future.
He said: "The Premier League has already considered setting up its own TV channel and I believe this could be the future, provided that the FA, the Premier League and the Football League work together."
The tie will be United's first in the FA Cup since being humiliated by Histon in last season's competition. They will, however, make the trip to Boundary Park in confident mood after having moved seven points clear at the top of League One with a 4-0 win over Yeovil.
And Grayson, whose side were unfortunate to bow out of the Carling Cup to Liverpool earlier this season, said: "It is a fantastic competition that is steeped in history. We would love to get through to the second round and then the third whether the big-hitters come in."
