Their concerns about the current political climate in the America are legitimised by President Donald Trump blaming ‘radical Islamic terror’ for the rise of crime in the UK.

Just as Britain would not lecture America on its liberal gun laws following the Las Vegas massacre, and countless other mass shootings, President Trump should not be using his office to stir up racial hatred in the UK in an attempt to justify his own stance on immigration.

If he’s prepared to be so reckless, and inflammatory, over crime figures, can Theresa May – the first world leader to visit President Trump after his inauguration – trust the American administration when it comes to post-Brexit trade deals?

Like it or not, Mrs May is going to have to weigh up Mr Trump’s impetuosity as Brexit negotiations with the European Union reach a critical phase with the tantalising possibility that tentative talks could begin with the EU about future trading arrangements by the end of the year.

Time will tell whether the EU is being sincere – or simply dragging Mrs May along in the hope of eking out further financial concessions which antagonise her more Eurosceptic backbenchers to such an extent that the Government falls.
