WHY do many, if not all supermarkets, persist in called their members of staff “colleagues”?

While workers may be colleagues to their bosses and certainly to each other, they are members of staff to their customers.

While checkout operators are undoubtedly very nice people (they are in my local Morrisons anyway), they are not and never will be my colleagues, so I find being told to “ask a colleague for help” both meaningless and irritating.

On another subject, why do Tesco (and other smaller retailers) waste money converting their trolleys to take the new pound coin?

Morrisons hasn’t charged for trolleys for years. Seemingly alone among supermarkets, they trust and value their customers, who repay that trust by not abusing the privilege of free trolleys.

The environment doesn’t seem to have been polluted as a result of Morrisons’ customer friendly attitude.

Guess which supermarket group is posting trend-busting profits? Clearly it pays to respect your customers.
