YP Letters: It's time to consign the interfering Lords to history books

A packed House of Lords as peers voted to defy the Government over Brexit.

IS the House of Lords beyond its sell-by date?

Winston Churchill described as follows: “The Lords is the survival of a feudal arrangement utterly passed out of its original meaning, a force long since passed away, which only now requires a smashing blow from the electors to finish it off forever.”

Churchill made this statement in 1910! And we are still permitting this unelected body to interfere with the democratic wishes of the majority of the people, a body that has the audacity to presume it is more knowledgeable than the proletariat.

Last June, most of us voted in a legally binding referendum with the majority supporting the leaving of the EU.

Playing politics with the wishes of the people is totally unacceptable and placing the UK Government in a weakened negotiating position is tantamount to stupidity. Take trade as a simple example. As a businessman, I have never concerned myself with import duties (trade barriers). If the benefits are there for both partners, trade will commence, irrespective of national agreements. If people make their opinions known, then perhaps we can complete this long overdue process to get rid of these overpaid, privileged and deluded functionaries now.

AFTER the latest Brexit vote in the Lords, it should now be clear to every fair-minded person that this unelected Upper House must be abolished.

It is highly unlikely that our Government can negotiate a good deal for the UK with the underhanded actions of Labour and Lib Dem peers determined to amend every part of Theresa May’s future plans.

Their allegiance is first and foremost with Brussels, rather than the UK.

While the Lib Dems constantly insist that the British taxpayer should contribute significantly more money to other European nations, Labour is basically a republican party, which is not in keeping with modern-day Britain.

THE outrageous performance in the Upper Chamber has surely spelt the death knell for the Liberal Democrats.

The loss of their refugee in the EU, and the potential serious reform of the Lords, could rid us of this pestilence.
