NOTWITHSTANDING the parking, check-in and boarding arrangements (which all leave much to be desired at Leeds Bradford Airport), I feel I really must endorse Mrs S Abbott’s comments (The Yorkshire Post, August 16) about the helpfulness and efficiency of the special assistance staff.

My disabled sister has just visited Yorkshire and she was amazed to find assistance waiting for her as soon as the aircraft steps were lowered. Full marks all round!

But it is not just at the airport that genuine helpfulness is to be found in Yorkshire.

When we took my sister on a day’s outing to Oxenhope the volunteers / paid staff on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway could not have been more helpful and the Northern Rail employees on the Skipton train also went beyond the call of duty.

The latter perform a vital safety role and must not be downgraded in Northern’s restructuring plans.

All in all, a wonderful example of Yorkshire folk constantly going out of their way to help, thereby enabling my sister to have a most enjoyable short break “up North”. If her experiences are typical of “God’s own county”, the Yorkshire tourist industry certainly deserves to thrive.
