Police in London are trying to trace relatives of a Sheffield man who died after being hit by a car in the capital.

Brian Wallace, believed to be aged in his early 60s, died on Thursday, 22 January after a collision with a car on Forest Road, Walthamstow.

According to the Metropolitan Police’s roads and transport policing team, he is believed to have originally lived in the Sheffield area.

Police attended alongside the ambulance service after they were called at around 10.20pm that day to reports of the collision. Mr Wallace was taken to an east London hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

A post-mortem examination which took place on 27 January at Whipps Cross Hospital Mortuary gave the cause of death as multiple injuries.

Police say they are satisfied the deceased man is Mr Wallace, but he has not been formally identified as officers have so far have yet to trace any next of kin.

They are appealing for anyone related to Brian, or anyone who knows of any family he may have had, to contact them.

Detective Sergeant John Woods, who is leading the investigation for the North East Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “No identifying documents were found on Brian or at his address in Chingford Road, Walthamstow where he was living, and his mobile phone only had local work related numbers on it, making identification and tracing next of kin very difficult.

“We know Brian was well known as a local builder and it is believed he has lived in the Walthamstow area for over 20 years.

“Local people we’ve spoken to who knew him state he was a private man and unfortunately knew very little about his family life.

“We’ve had some mention that he had a family, and that he was originally from the Sheffield area, but so far our enquiries have not resulted in tracing anyone.

“So we are appealing to anyone, especially in the Sheffield area, who may be related to, or may have known, Brian Wallace to contact us.”

The 21-year-old driver of the car, a black Mercedes C-class, stopped at the scene. He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and taken into custody at an east London police station.

He has been bailed to return, pending further enquiries, on a date in late October.

Anyone who can assist the collision investigators is asked to call police on 020 8597 4874.
