Former home secretary Lord David Blunkett warns voters by supporting Theresa May they could lose representatives who have worked hard for their communities such as Holly Lynch, who is defending the Halifax seat for Labour where she was first elected two years ago.

Writing for The Yorkshire Post, the former Sheffield Brightside MP claims that “there is a danger that the predominant narrative is one of the presidential contest between Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn – a re-run of the Iron Lady, speaking from – and for – the Home Counties.”

He continues: “But this is not a presidential election. It’s about who represents you in the constituency in which you live, and on behalf of the community where your children go to school or your gran is in need of social care.”

Lord Blunkett’s comments echo the thoughts of many Labour activists who are ignoring the party’s national campaign messages and are focusing on helping Ms Lynch, Paula Sherriff, Mary Creagh, Tracy Brabin and Angela Smith in defending their Halifax, Dewsbury, Wakefield, Batley and Spen and Penistone and Stocksbridge constituencies which look like they could fall to the Conservatives on current polling.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn launched the party’s national manifesto in Bradford yesterday which included a £50bn tax hike to fund an ambitious spending plan.
