The prospects for the region’s property sector over the next few years are more difficult to predict than ever.

A cheap pound and a significant housing shortage are two factors that should keep demand high, though development activity could be affected by the political uncertainty and a possible drop in consumer spending as a result.

What is the best project you have been involved in?

The Victoria Gate shopping centre in Leeds is by far the largest and most exciting project I’ve been involved in recently. The quality of design, construction and finish is an absolute testament to Hammerson’s commitment to the city.

What is your favourite building in the region?

It’s an odd one, but my favourite building is the Emley Moor Tower. I think it’s typical of Yorkshire to be home to the tallest building in Britain but to never boast about it. If I owned it, I’d stick an observation deck and a rotating restaurant at the top. The views would be incredible.

If you could change one thing to improve the property industry in the region what would it be?

I would like to see Yorkshire’s city regions prepare their own spatial plans and for them to have a level of control over major planning decisions. Planning at a city region level will help Yorkshire to secure the government investment it needs, and then draw the private sector investment that follows.

Whom do you most admire in the Yorkshire property industry?

Until recently, Phil Crabtree was the chief planning officer at Leeds City Council and he oversaw a period of change in the city. I worked with him on the Victoria Gate development and really admired his approach to planning and in particular the importance of our professional judgement as planners.
