VINTAGE cycles, tractors, motorbikes, showman’s engines and steamrollers were among
the vehicles on show this weekend at the 48th annual steam engine rally in Masham, North Yorkshire.

Attractions included parades of engines, a martial arts display, craft stalls, children’s activities and shows of lurchers and
ferrets.

There were also cookery demonstrations in the Coal Shovel Kitchen, which was new to the rally this year.

A spokesman for the event said that the event saw “interesting exhibits in 21 classes, along with entertainment for all ages”.

He added that the Coal Shovel Kitchen sought to “celebrate and highlight local culinary talent and the wealth of local quality good producers in our area”.

“Many a wholesome breakfast has been cooked on a fire shovel in the firebox of an engine”, he said.

Those who visited the event took to Twitter yesterday to share their excitement at its success.

One visitor said: “Masham steam is all the rage – people flock to see a bygone age.”

Meanwhile, a formal dinner has been organised in support of next year’s Masham steam rally.

To be held at Masham Town Hall on Saturday, October 19, tickets cost £25 and are available by calling 01765 689569.
