Reopened! A59 at Kex Gill is open again for drivers

North Yorkshire County Council said it would do 'everything in its power' to re-open the A59 at Kex Gill which had been affected by the New Year floods earlier than its six-week target - and it seems to have succeeded.

The county council was forced to shut the major route, which runs between Harrogate and Skipton, on January 5 after heavy rains caused substantial cracks on the slope.

But this vital stretch of road which anyone driving to and from Skipton and beyond to the Lake District tends to use, not to forget all the villages off it, was clearly open and back in working order yesterday when I drove to Grassington.

Which must come as a great relief for villages which has felt cut-off by the road closure.

Engineers had identified a substantial flow of water at the top of the area of instability and work has been going on for weeks to install a temporary solution to drain the water away.
