Review: The Rocky Horror Show *****
Scores of trampy sluts and sweet transvestites have been descending upon the good city of Bradford all week, which can only mean one thing: Richard O'Brien's racy raunch-fest The Rocky Horror Show is in town.
Head to the Alhambra in normal clothes at your peril; you'll feel woefully underdressed. For Rocky virgins here's a crash course on the rules: don't glare at people for talking during the show, sing and dance along as much as you possibly can, and laugh, squeal and whoop your way through the funniest, rudest and most enjoyable night out you've had in ages.
The formula is a simple and winning one that always seems to work, yet we've all seen woeful interpretations of what we thought was brilliant raw material, so credit here must go not only to the catchy tunes and talented performers but also the direction, choreography, imaginative lighting design and clever use of set-pieces.
The inherently outrageous flamboyance of the plot and score is carried through to every last detail of this touring production, making for a blinding ensemble performance. Special credit must, however, go to David Bedella as the phenomenal Frank 'N' Furter, whose superbly mellifluous purr of a baritone voice – not to mention his mesmerisingly beautiful legs – effortlessly holds the stage.
