Review: The Saturdays ****
Girls Aloud-light is how I probably would have described The Saturdays before seeing them live on stage (that's if it's possible to be lighter than Cheryl & co), and my opinion was not altered by their performance.
Cute and lively is about as good as it gets from the five popettes, comprising Una, Mollie, Frankie and Rochelle and Vanessa, who takes lead vocals most often, although they do all get a fair crack of the mic and they can all sing.
They can all talk the talk too, compering their own show in the manner of highly trained stage school graduates who can flow seamlessly into children's TV presenting, if required.
Impressive in its own way, but not an act to make your hair stand on end.
Thankfully, they rattled through all their hits (If This Is Love, Issues, Just Can't Get Enough) wearing some fabulous costume changes, much to the delight of my 14-year-old daughter and all the other teens and pre-teens swaying along in open-mouthed awe.
It was support act Pixie Lott who was the revelation of the night. This 18-year-old is true talent with a rich, soulful voice, lashings of bouffant, shiny blonde hair and a tiny pair of sequin hotpants – a winning combination even before belting out her debut single, Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh), which went straight to number one when it was released last month.
This is the song we were humming on the way home. Miss Lott is the real deal.
