Rising star Ruby is one for the record
Reginald Brace ONE of Yorkshire's rising jazz singers, Ruby Wood, records her debut album tonight and tomorrow at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in her home town of Huddersfield.
Originally it was to have been one show but demand was so great for an extra performance of a concert in which Ruby, 19, will sing time-honoured standards associated with the legendary Ella Fitzgerald.
Tracks from the two dates will be released in September by a new record label, Jellymould Jazz, which is dedicated to supporting new jazz artists in the North.
"Ruby embodies everything that is right for this project – an up-and-coming talent with a superb voice," said spokesman Phil Gregory.
Ruby's two shows will be followed at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, next Friday, by Dave O'Higgins who will be appearing with the University of Huddersfield Big Band under the direction of conductor and pianist Sean Miller.
The personable and richly talented saxophonist makes an ideal guest for a band with a justifiably high reputation.
