Robbie Williams - Roundhay Park
Despite controversy, Robbie Williams wowed thousands of pop fans young and old with his performance at Leeds' Roundhay Park on September 8 and 9. This was your verdict.
Natasha, Sheffield: "Once again a spectacular performance from the best entertainer out there.. From the second Rob popped up on stage 100,000 people were eating out of his hand. The screaming was deafening, the atmosphere created memories that will last a lifetime.
"Whatever you think of Robbie you can't fail to fall under his spell. The legendary charm was there in full force along with the megawatt grin. Great to see him return to his northern roots. Yes Robbie you still belong - and we all love you too. Long may you continue to entertain us! Come back soon."
Bridget Tayan, by email: "This concert was definitely worth any disruption caused to local residents.
"Whatever your opinion of Robbie or his music, you have to admire the showmanship of someone who can attract so many people of different ages to his concerts. Robbie doesn't only attract girls in their twenties (as the TV coverage would suggest) - there were men and women of all ages. The youngest person we saw was about seven, the oldest probably in their seventies. Everyone, regardless of age, danced and sang along with great enthusiasm, and despite the amount of alcohol consumed by some, the vast majority of people remained very good natured.
"The only downside was the rubbish - people made very little attempt to take it away with them and there were not enough rubbish bins in the park or along the route towards it."
Donna Wallace, Leeds: "I attended Saturday nights show with my sister and some friends. I have been to a few concert and have to say that this one was amazing. All three acts were extrememly entertaining and you could not ask for a better setting than Roundhay Park. The arena is perfect for this kind of show its just a shame that it's not used for more events. The publicity that Leeds has receive due to this event (and its worldwide broadcast) is priceless. Leeds is a great city. Lets hope that we can keep on attracting big acts like Robbie in the future."
Vicki Jewell, Darlington (by text): "Excellent performance by all but far too many people in 1 place. Could have been serious problems if the area needed to be cleared for any reason. But all in all an excellent day."
Tania Findlay, Harrogate: "I went to see Robbie by chance last night, unable to get through in November, I didn't get tickets but a work colleague was unable to go and offered me her tickets!
"Not one to look a gift horse in the mouth I grabbed the oppertunity with both hands! I wasn't disappointed, the gig was well organised by both the promoters and the council, the police were helpful with directions after the show and the atmosphere was fantastic.
"Robbie was amazing he and his band put on an brilliant show singing songs old and new and proving why he's such a great entertainer. I went to see Madonna at Wembley last month and paid 160 for the pleasure, she was OK, Robs tickets were a quarter of that price and he was superb!
"The highlight for me was when the music went silent and 90,000 people of all ages were singing Angels, it brought a tear to me eye!
"Those killjoys that claim its all a hassle to put on such an event should look at the revenue it created for the local area and remember that they were young once!"
Jane Williams, by email: "My husband and I were lucky enough to attend the Robbie concert in Roundhay park last night after I won 2 tickets on Real Radio's breakfast show on Tuesday.
"After trying unsuccessfully since November to get tickets for the event we were finally there and it was a fantastic day.
"The weather was perfect , the entry well organised and, after a short while in the queue, at 2.45, we settled ourselves towards the bottom of the rear banking, facing centre stage and with a great view. There was a constant stream of fans from all directions and everybody settled themselves with ease into the arena. By 8.30 we were ready for Robbie who eventually appeared through the fireworks, flames and smoke to sing Radio. The huge screens enabled us to see Robbie in close up. In the second part of his act the man himself appeared high above the stage before descending to the stage in a cradle to give us his new single Rude Box.
"He entertained as only Robbie can and said he was amazed that we had all turned out to see him! Jonathan Wilkes joined him for Me and My Shadow. I couldn't believe that at 10.30 he had been on stage for 2 hours and Im sure like me no-opne wanted to leave after such an awesome experience.
"Thank you Robbie for coming to Yorkshire and giving us such a great performance."
K Mackie, by email: "What a fantastic night last night in Leeds! I cannon believe how up close we were with our brilliant Golden circle tickets. we arrived around 5.30 and didnt go into the main area until maybe 7pm and managed to get pretty close as you can see!
"The set list had changed to what had been listed on his official website last week and a couple of my really favourite songs were not played and instead he sang his new release "rudebox" not something I, or many other robbie fans, will be rushing to buy!
"The only downside was the chaos on leaving the carpark. i only hope that they have that sorted out for tonight, they really could have organised that better so that there was a filter in turn system instead of vehicles, mainly buses, raming their way into the queue meaning some poor people were stuck for hours.
"But it was brilliant, i just feel so sorry for those stuck all the way at the back of the field because being close was amazing!"
The only problem we occurred was the reaction of how the people that greeted us into the concert, we arrived approx 4.30pm / 5pm on entry to the park, they told us that we could not bring food into the grounds, ( We did not realise we could not bring crisps and sandwiches into the park) the food was snatched of us and we also had a small plastic stool for my 9 year old niece in order for her to see !!! This was also man handled / snatched of us, I was treated like a common thug - NOT IMPRESSED.
I can appreciate that the organisers say no food but I do feel that our human rights was taken away in the aspect that this is a public park in regards to the freedom of eating food of our own in a public place and that we had to therefore endure in eating the poor quality of food on sale.
The people greeting us and taking the food of us could off given us the option of going away and eating our food before going into the grounds !!! Rather than man handling us!!!
This doesn't tell me much about the Leeds city council - and would be very interested if the artist Robbie Williams himself would eat this rubbish!!! apart from that, the concert itself was very entertaining.
I would see Robbie again but certainly not go to another concert in Round hay park, I would like to add that I work hard for a living and do not need to be treated like a thug!!!! and to top it up it was very difficult for my 9 year old niece to actually see Robbie!!! (This was my niece's 9th Birthday present gift)
