Rugby star felt like weeping for his lost relative

The rugby player Lewis Moody, who was part of the England World Cup winning side in 2003, said he almost broke down in tears when he discovered he had lost a relative at Passchendaele.

He had been making a film at Tyne Cot on rugby players killed in the battle when he discovered that his mother’s great uncle was one of those with no grave remembered at the site.

Mr Moody, 39, said his mother had no idea that Ernest Lovejoy had fought and died in Belgium.

He said: “There was a wave of emotions that almost caused me to break down, sobbing almost uncontrollably, over someone I have never met, never known was even in existence until this moment.

“You can’t really express the emotion. I didn’t understand at the time.”
