In the Championship, Sheffield United coasted to a comfortable 3-1 win at Blackpool, Sheffield Wednesday were pegged back to 1-1 against Preston, but there were away defeats for Barnsley (2-0 at Birmingham) and Doncaster (2-0 at QPR).
Elsewhere, Huddersfield Town slumped to a 3-1 home defeat against MK Dons, Leeds United were held 1-1 at Yeovil, but there were League Two wins for Rotherham United and Bradford City.
MK Dons jumped into the top five with an emphatic 3-1 win at Huddersfield.
Roberto Di Matteo's side - once again without Keith Andrews - were cruising 3-0 after goals by Jude Stirling (16), Peter Leven (38) and Sam Baldock (64) before Gary Roberts's late consolation.
At the Don Valley, Rotherham maintained their impressive start to the season with a 3-1 win, thanks to goals from Sharps, Reid and Rhodes inside 28 minutes. Ellison replied for Chester.
Goals from Brodie and a Crowell own goal on 57 minutes gave York City a 2-2 draw against Northwich Victoria in the Blue Square Conference.
