Somerset secure stunning win over Yorkshire

ARUL SUPPIAH'S career-best 131 and an exhilarating 54-ball century from Peter Trego led Somerset to an astonishing four-wicket LV County Championship victory over Yorkshire at Taunton.

Set a massive 476 to win in a minimum of 90 overs, the home side reached their target with 4.3 overs to spare. It was the second highest successful run chase in the competition's 145-year history, the fourth highest in first class cricket in England and the eighth highest of all time.

The west country county got off to a brilliant start as Suppiah and Marcus Trescothick (96) amassed 187 for the first wicket.

David Stiff added a useful 49 before Trego blasted the hosts to a four-wicket win.

The home team had been 257-2 from 57 overs at the tea interval after Yorkshire had stemmed the flow of runs during the afternoon session, Somerset having lunched on 123-0 off 25 overs.

Trescothick fell four runs short of his second century in the game when he played on to Matthew Hoggard trying to withdraw his bat, while opening partner Suppiah skied the off-spinner Azeem Rafiq to Anthony McGrath at mid-wicket after scoring 131, his second first-class century.

Trescothick's and Suppiah's opening stand was worth 187 in 42 overs.
