St Leger could be next as Conduit blasts to victory
Conduit was given a 14-1 quote by the sponsors for the Ladbrokes St Leger after Ryan Moore swept from last to first in the totesportcasino.com Handicap at Epsom on Saturday.
Owned by Ballymacoll Stud and trained by Sir Michael Stoute, the three-year-old was smashed into 11-8 favourite in the ring and from an unpromising position he thundered down the straight to record a striking six-length success.
Ballymacoll's Peter Reynolds said: "He is an improving type and we'll have to see what the trainer says about plans, but he could go to Royal Ascot.
"He is a close relation to Hard Top so there is no reason why he won't stay further. He'll be a nice horse for next year, too."
Lady Gloria is set for a European tour after James Given's filly bravely collected the Group Three Princess Elizabeth Stakes.
She did not do much wrong when second to Luca Cumani's Royal Ascot hotpot Bankable at Goodwood last week and was given a brilliant ride by Tom Queally in making all as a well-backed 7-1 shot, holding off 7-2 joint-favourite Cicerole by half a length.
Given said: "The tactics were to try and get to the front, and when you are lesser-fancied they sometimes ignore you up front. She was able to slip the field and keep lengthening.
"She does like soft ground, but after this I wouldn't be afraid to run on good again. She'd never run on fast so plans are ground dependent and she is entered in Europe later in the season."
Alan Munro missed the chance to add a second Derby to his haul on Authorized last year due to enforced absence but he was able to make an impression on his return to the track in the Woodcote Stakes aboard the William Jarvis-trained Smokey Storm (4-1 favourite).
"I thought that was a really impressive performance – he put the race to bed with a furlong and a half to go," said Jarvis.
"The owners will be keen to go to Ascot now. I'm not, so I'll have to do some explaining as I am thinking of a Group Two in Ireland on June 29."
William Buick picked a good time for a first Epsom winner by flying home on Holbeck Ghyll (15-2) in the totesport.com 'Dash', and Philip Hobbs, a leading light of the National Hunt scene, got his name on the scoreboard as Bureaucrat (11-1) took the Northern Dancer Handicap under Jamie Spencer.
Mac Gille Eoin, also an 11-1 chance, landed the Prince's Stand Handicap to earn a quote of 20-1 with William Hill for the Wokingham at Royal Ascot.
