Residents have taken a double take after spotting a spelling error on a new street signs.

The sign for Middlewood Crescent in Fylingthorpe, near the seaside town of Whitby, was wrongly put in place with an extra ‘d’ - leaving residents perplexed.

The street sign now reads ‘Midddlewood Crescent.’

Martin Pedley, asset and risk manager at Scarborough Borough Council blamed an “administrative error” for the spelling error.

Mr Pedley said: “The street name was incorrectly spelt on the sign and unfortunately the mistake was not spotted during the installation process. A replacement sign has been ordered and will be installed upon delivery.

“In future, checking procedures at the suppliers and during our installation process will be tightened.”
