Streethouse fall just short in Cup final
PONTEFRACT League champions Streethouse slipped to an agonising six-run defeat against Glynde and Beddingham in yesterday's National Village Cup final at Lord's.
Chasing the East Sussex club's 207-9 in a 40-over contest, Streethouse were floundering at 98-5 from 23 overs before Paul Langley (68) and skipper Richard Vigars (41) shared a 97-run stand to put them back in the game.
However, Streethouse's hopes faded when Langley and Vigars were both dismissed in the penultimate over.
They were left needing 17 off the final over but managed only 10 and finished on 201-7.
After winning the toss and electing to field in their first appearance in the final, Streethouse bowled well to keep Glynde's batsmen in check.
Stuart Bellwood had Glynde's Dominic Shepheard caught behind in the second over.
Joe Adams and Callum Smith then put on 70 for the second wicket before Smith (32) was caught and bowled by Scott Bland.
All-rounder Vigars took centre stage in the second-half of the innings, claiming 4-60 from nine overs. His victims included Glynde's top scorer Adams (79).
Glynde's Dominic Harris hit three sixes in a rapid 41 but Streethouse's Jonathan Hughes kept the total down to 207 by snapping up 3-33 from his nine overs.
Streethouse's reply started badly when Hughes was caught behind for just four in the first over.
Left-hander Callum Geldart (34) led a recovery before Geldart and Martin Rhodes fell in the same over. They were quickly followed by Mark Robinson and Paul McMullan as the Pontefract club slumped to 98-5.
Opener Langley stood firm, reaching his half-century off 81 deliveries. He was joined by Vigars who quickly found his range, hitting three sixes in one over off spinner Ollie Bailey.
The momentum seemed to have swung Streethouse's way when they required 35 off the last five overs with five wickets in hand.
However, the equation then became 19 from 12 balls before Streethouse were rocked by a double blow when Vigars and Langley were both bowled in quick succession.
Paul Haselden and Bellwood could only muster 10 runs off the last over, leaving Streethouse narrowly short.
