A TEENAGE driver from Leeds is fighting for his life after an ambulance and a van collided in Sheffield.
A paramedics' rapid response vehicle was heading out to an emergency call just after noon yesterday when a white van pulled out of Fitzwalter Road, off Granville Road in Norfolk Park.
The ambulance smashed into the side of the Citroen van - leaving the male driver, a 19-year-old, with life-threatening head injuries.
Sgt Steve Askham of South Yorkshire Police said: "An ambulance responding to a medical emergency has been in collision with a white Citroen van that appears to have emerged from a side road."
The van driver was rushed to hospital with a police escort. The paramedic was unhurt in the collision.
Officers cordoned off Granville Road between the junctions with Shrewsbury Road to Norfolk Park Road.
An eyewitness said the road closure caused chaos as drivers looked for alternative routes.
He added: "Both vehicles looked in a really bad way."
Investigators have asked that anyone who witnessed the incident call police on 0114 220 2020
