The Tuesday Club - Sheffield Union (Foundry)
KIM Watson caught two home-grown bands at the Tuesday Club's first night after Christmas 2008. Here's her review:
"It was Tuesday Club's first event after the Christmas break and what better way to kick off the year than with some home-grown talents in the way of two totally different bands.
"First up on stage was the 11 strong The Legend of the 7 Black Tentacles; their sound is a mixture of hip hop, rock and electronica…with a hint of classical and... okay, I don't know what it is!
"With the impact of so many different sounds collectively it creates a unique sound, which the crowd reacted well to. But from what I had read about them I had expected something a bit edgier, I like what they are doing but I was not blown away. Credit where it's due though for doing something adventurous - it was refreshing to see a group playing live and not relying heavily on backing music like some acts.
"Up next was the six-piece Lazy Tree Surgeons, their influences being Miles Davis and Johnny Cash, and were a welcome group to the proceedings with some soft jazz funk. These were really excellent and created a great atmosphere for the now crowded dance floor. I'm not a huge fan of female vocals usually but vocalist Frankie's soft, soulful voice swept over the room and really worked in combining the sounds together.
"Resident DJs Andy H, Stoaty and Mikey J helped the night along in between bands and finished the last couple of hours in style, with some heavy beats to give the regulars something to move to.
"All in all it was a different night to what usually goes on at TTC but a nice change. It's good to see that more is going on in the urban scene than drum n bass and Hip Hop. And with the return night only 2 in, it was well worth it."
