Tottenham sign £8m Sheffield United duo but Blackwell delighted as Walker loaned straight back
SHEFFIELD UNITED manager Kevin Blackwell could benefit from signing Tottenham Hotspur players on loan as part of the deal that has taken Kyle Naughton and Kyle Walker to the Premier League club.
The Blades yesterday confirmed that the two full-backs had moved to White Hart Lane in a deal that is believed to be worth around 8m.
Spurs pipped Everton to the signature of Naughton, much to the frustration of David Moyes who made the 20-year-old one of his major transfer targets of the summer.
Under the terms of the deal with Spurs, Walker was immediately loaned back to United and the club have confirmed that other players could also make a temporary switch from White Hart Lane to Bramall Lane.
Manager Kevin Blackwell last night said: "Having Walker available is a very important part of our strategy and it is exciting to have the chance to talk with Tottenham and judge whether any other of their players might fit into our squad.
"If we think that someone could help us we could take them on a short-term loan throughout August and, if required, extend it to a season-long arrangement after that."
The sale of both Naughton and Walker had been widely touted since United lost the Championship play-off final against Burnley at Wembley in May.
Twenty-year-old Naughton, a boyhood Blades fan, made his debut for the club last August and went on to make 50 appearances. So impressive were his displays, he was named in the PFA Championship Team of the Year for 2008-09.
Walker, in contrast, only burst on to the scene in the final weeks of the season. The 19-year-old went on to make seven appearances, including all three of United's games in the play-offs.
The Blades manager said: "Our Academy is proving its worth in producing assets for Sheffield United and, in these current uncertain financial times, we are pursuing a policy we believe will enable me to try to build a competitive team whilst developing the club's long-term future."
Naughton and Walker are the second and third high profile departures from Bramall Lane in the past two transfer windows following James Beattie's switch to Stoke City last January.
Blackwell moved last week to bring in full-back Andy Taylor from Tranmere Rovers for an undisclosed fee.
