Towns celebrate home-grown talent
JAZZ
Partisans, who play for Scarborough Jazz at The Cask on Wednesday, are four gifted musicians who operate under the heading of jazz-rock but are happy to be described as unclassifiable.
Certainly an urge for originality inspires the music of saxophonist Julian Siegel, guitarist Phil Robson, bassist Thad Kelly and drummer Gene Calderazzo.
Their new album By Proxy is exciting proof of their hunger to break new ground without losing sight of the appeal which has made them club and festival favourites since the quartet's formation in 1996.
Wakefield Jazz is filling the gap between summer and autumn seasons by giving local musicians a richly deserved chance to perform at the Sports Club in Eastmoor Road.
The admirable Nikki Allan has sung there with her sextet and tonight it is the turn of a Mingus-influenced quintet led by bassist Adrian Knowles.
Next Friday features the Leeds Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra run by the indefatigable Brendan Duffy. This is the current version of a firmly-established band which was founded in 1991.
