Leeds West MP Rachel Reeves and the Britain Stronger In Europe group say the agreement would not lead to the widespread privatisation of the NHS, as some within Labour and those in favour of Brexit fear.

Speaking to the Labour List blog, Ms Reeves said that with Labour naturally being the party of the NHS there are concerns within ranks over opening up the British market to American companies.

She suggested “the TTIP issue is being manipulated” by those who want us to leave Europe to persuade voters to back exit.

She said: “Thankfully, anyone who studies both the detail and the political intention of this deal can see that it poses no threat at all to our health service.

“What it will do is open up the American market to British companies, creating opportunities for business that will boost jobs and growth here at home.”

The Labour politician added that the TTIP deal will not stand in the way of the British Government having full public control over health services, water, education and social services.
