Tuesday night football: Leeds miss out on Wembley
LEEDS UNITED'S Wembley dream ended at Brunton Park when they were defeated after a penalty shoot-out by Carlisle United in the Johnstone's Paint trophy Northern Area Final.
Leeds won 3-2 on the night - thanks to goals from Robert Snodgrass Jason crowe and mike Grella - to make it 4-4 overall after Carlisle had won 2-1 at Elland Road in the first leg.
But when it came to penalties, the home side proved to have the edge, with Shane Lowry and Bradley Johnson missing from 12 yards for Simon Grayson's side enabling Caralisle to win 6-5.
In the Championship, Sheffield United endured a miserable time when they went down 2-1 at Preston North End.
Matthew James put the home side ahead after 10 minutes and doubled their lead with 20 minutes left from the penalty spot, with Jon Parkin slotting home a rebound after Ian Bennett's impressive save.
Mark Yeates pulled one back with his first goal for the Blades, but it was too little, too late for the Blades.

Barnsley went down 2-1 at Middlesbrough, who leapfrogged above them in the table.
Chris Killen put Boro ahead midway through the first half before Gary O'Neil doubled the lead. Barnsley pulled one back through Hugo Colace but Boro survived.
Sheffield Wednesday's fine form under Alan Irvine continued with a 2-0 home win over Blackpool.
James O'Connor who powered an unstoppable header beyond Seasiders goalkeeper Paul Rachubka after just two minutes. Darren Potter doubled the lead with a left-footed shot in off the post.

In League One, Huddersfield Town shared the points with hosts Brighton in a 0-0 draw.
In League Two, Rotherham United moved up to fourth in the table thanks to a 2-0 home win over Dagenham & Redbridge.
The Millers went ahead in the 11th minute when Adam Le Fondre converted from close range and the same player doubled the lead from the spot after he was fouled by Mark Arber.
